Celebrate Scottish Heritage at the Coastal Highland Games
Spring is a time of non-stop festivals around Myrtle Beach, with everything from car shows and carnivals to film festivals and bike rallies. Late April offers a fun afternoon of feats of strength and Scottish culture as the Coastal Highland Games return to the Grand Strand.
Taking place on Saturday, April 25th from 8 AM to 5 PM, this year marks the second installment of the Coastal Highland Games. Last year’s inaugural competition was a huge success, and this year the action takes place at Grand Dunes Marina Park at 8201 Marina Parkway in Myrtle Beach. Scores of competitors from all over the country will descend upon the park to try to best the field in a variety of traditional Scottish contests. Events will include:
The hammer throw, where athletes must launch a hammer weighing from 12-22 pounds as far as they can, with the longest throw winning.
The sheaf toss, challenging athletes to use a pitchfork to hoist and toss a 16-20 pound weighted sack over a raised bar, with the highest toss taking home the prize.
The open stone, a predecessor of the modern day shotput, with competitors flinging a 16-20 pound stone as far as they can down the lawn.
The light weight throw (14-18 pounds) and heavy weight throw (28-56 pounds), where athletes use a spinning technique to launch a weighted projectile as far as possible.
The caber toss, where contestants must lift and vertically balance a 20’ wooden beam weighing around 150 pounds, then toss the beam to flip it as close as possible to a 12 o’ clock position.
In addition to the athletic displays, live music by pipe and drum bands will fill the air with classic and contemporary Scottish music. Beer tents will offer brews by Asheville’s Highland Brewing Company. Little ones are sure to have lots of fun at the Kids’ Glen area, with exhibitions by Medieval Times, a petting zoo, inflatables and bounce houses, border collie sheep herding, pony rides, face painting, games and more. The Coastal Highland Games truly have something for everyone, making this a can’t-miss festival on your spring vacation to Myrtle Beach!
